THE
TEACHER'S ROLE IN DISCIPLINE:
The teacher has the primary responsibility and authority for
the consistent maintenance of discipline in the classroom,
in the school building and on the grounds.
Teachers have the authority to:
Recommend suspension of a student.
Deny certain classroom privileges.
Use such reasonable measures as may be necessary to maintain
control in the classroom, in the school building, on the
school grounds at any time and on the way to and from school.
Keep a student after school after giving the student a one-day
advance notice unless prior approval of the parent/guardian
has been obtained. It will be the teacher's job to
supervise these students.
All teachers and Board members will be held responsible
for enforcement of the disciplinary policy. Enforcement shall
be monitored through this chain of accountability to ensure
consistent and constant implementation in a fair and impartial
manner.
*** THE LEAD TEACHER'S ROLE IN DISCIPLINE
If the teacher's efforts to solve the problems are
unsuccessful, the student may be referred to the principal
who has the responsibility and authority to use such reasonable
measures as may be necessary to maintain control within the
classroom, the school building and on the school property.
THE LEAD TEACHER OR DESIGNEE WILL ESTABLISH AND IMPLEMENT
THE RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR THE SCHOOL GOVERNING THE CONDUCT
OF THE STUDENTS.
The Lead teacher and/or designee have the authority to impose
suspension on students for failure to comply with school
regulations; and if it should be necessary, to recommend
to the Board of Trustees expulsion of students. In the event
of a violation of appropriate conduct not specifically listed
in the policy, punishment may be administered based on the
judgment of the Lead teacher or designee.
*** THE SCHOOL BOARD HAS THE DISCRETIONARY AUTHORITY
TO MOVE TO ANY LEVEL OF DISCIPLINE BASED ON THE SERIOUSNESS
OF THE CASE. LAW ENFORCEMENT MAY BE CONTACTED IF DEEMED NECESSARY.
NOTIFICATION OF UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR
If a preliminary conference between the student and the teacher/Lead
teacher does not remedy the disciplinary problem, the parents
will be notified of the unacceptable behavior. The Lead
teacher will be required to keep a record of the circumstances
that lead to the notification during the years a student
is in attendance.
The following may be used for misbehavior consequences:
After-school detention - The student will report to
the assigned detention room after school. This is a supervised,
quiet time. Students must bring school work or a book to
read.
In-school suspension -The student is removed from
the classroom but remains in school. The environment is supervised
and the student will continue all assigned classroom work.
Out-of-school suspension - The student is not allowed
to attend school or any school related activity. Completion
of classroom work is the responsibility of the student and
should be completed upon return.
Expulsion - The student is not allowed to attend Morin
School. The Board of Education will make all final decisions
on expulsions.
