HEALTH - EMERGENCIES

Each school district policy for treatment of accident victims will be the policy followed by the nurse assigned in that district. The nurse shares with school personnel the responsibility for first aid and care of the sick child. In each school, the nurse will develop with the classroom teacher or designee a suitable procedure for the immediate and temporary care of students who are injured or become ill.

The nurse is not the individual directly responsible for providing the first aid care. Personnel on the staff of each school must be prepared to render first aid and to act responsible in emergency situations.

The nurse is available to:

- Render first aid to seriously injured or ill students, if in the building.

- Consult with the parents and school personnel in the care of
the ill or injured child.

- Select first aid supplies and provide written medically
approved instructions for the care of the sick and injured
students.

- Provide telephone consultation to school staff regarding
serious medical problems when she is on duty elsewhere.
