BUS SERVICE

The Board will attempt to provide school bus service in a manner that will serve the greater number of families. It prefers to run buses on all-weather roads, and its intent is to provide transportation only for those students living in School District #17.

It is the policy of the Board that any requests for additions to bus routes, or requests for new bus routes must be made before June 15th prior to the opening of school in the fall of that year. Any requests for such purposes must be in writing stating the number of miles involved, number of children, whether there is a turn-around problem involved, and why it should be run.

The bus driver is authorized to enforce the rules and regulations necessary for the safety of the passengers on the bus while the bus is in motion.

The bus driver must meet state specifications in driving safety as well as keep his/her bus in good working order and clean.

No sleds will be transported on the bus at any time.

A child will be dropped off only at their designated stop unless a written permission slip from the parents is given to the bus driver at the beginning of the day.

Students will get off the bus only at designated stops - not just along the highway somewhere where a parent may have caught up to the bus.

In an emergency situation only, a parent or guardian may call the school to request that his/her child get off at a stop other than their own or ride the bus when he/she does not ordinarily do so. The call will be documented with the date, time, information given on the phone, and the signature of the teacher or designee taking the call, and the request will be granted. A copy of the message will be given to the bus driver and a copy will be kept on record at the school.

Overshoes, hats, coats, gloves, and warm clothing, such as snowmobile suits, extra overalls, snow pants, insulated suits, etc., should be worn by the students when the temperature is below freezing. Students riding the bus need the above clothing to keep them warm should the bus get stalled, stopped, or involved in an accident of some kind. The students need the warm clothing at school to ensure good health when playing on the playground.

Bus safety rules are necessary in order to avoid accidents - accidents caused by a distracted bus driver or injuries that may occur when students stand or move around on a moving bus. Therefore, in order to ensure the safety of the passenger, the following rules and regulations have been established by the Board of Trustees of School District #17:

STUDENTS NEED A NOTE FROM PARENTS, WITH A WRITTEN APPROVAL BY THE LEAD TEACHER TO GET OFF AT ANY BUS STOP OTHER THAN THEIR OWN.
